Is this better than the marpac dohm-ds dual speed sound conditioner? (it’s currently the #1 best seller in sound machines on amazon). Why yes/why no?

Let me explain my rationale. First, this has a feature that the marpac does not, the timer. Then, i went by amazon reviews.this one has 4.7 out of 5 stars versus 4.4 out of 5 for the marpac dohm. It also has more 5 star and fewer 1 and 2 star reviews. Marpac had more reviews overall. 9879 versus 5200.also, its no longer the #1 best seller, a $16.99 homedics is.i just bought mine today. They were priced the same. So all i had to go by were the reviews and the timer which is a feature i wanted but didn’t have to have.(i got mine with a 20% off code for cyber monday at jet. $32.80 net with free shipping.)

Anyone use a real fan first and then switched to this? Why did you switch ? I use 10′ solder exhaust fan.

I like this better than a real fan because: you have 10 different fan ‘frequencies’ to choose from. Can experiment to see what masks the annoying sound you are trying to cover up….also has 10 different ‘white noise’ frequencies too…can adjust volume quite a bit more than with a fan…and is also good if you need big wooshing fan sound to cover up a noise, but don’t always want a fan blowing air around. I hope this helps! I use it in an office environment- it has been great. (before i was using fan – sometimes had to use 2…got very windy.)

How is this any better than just hooking a speaker up to an ipod or phone and playing white noise audio files? Or just using an actual fan?

I currently use my apple homepod to play white noise in our bedroom. Apple music has a number of white noise tracks available. I use a track off an album by ‘dr. White noise’, i made a ‘white noise’ playlist on itunes, i copied the track (‘soft dehumidifier fan delight’) 12 times so it will play for 12 hours (the track is 1 hour long). It works and sounds great. You could certainly use speakers hooked up to your phone or ipod to accomplish the same thing. However, if you needed to purchase speakers to use with the phone/ipod, it seems like you might as well get this unless you want to use the speakers for music, etc. In the bedroom. This device would certainly be easier to use than hooking up speakers each night, plus it would likely take up less space. That said, i am thinking about trying this device too as we could use it in our airstream travel trailer when we are traveling.

Can it run on batteries? If so, for how long? Also has anyone used it overseas?

Definitely. As other users have answered, just get a portable usb power pack. A 25800 mah power pack like this (https://www.amazon.com/dp/b07xq94zl9) should easily power one of these units at full volume all night long. I’ve used this while camping and it works great.

Will it run for 8-10 hours straight?

I use it for my babies, they sleep 12h. It runs until i turn it off (unless otherwise programmed).

Does the unit remember the last setting or do you have to reselect every time?

It remembers the last sound chosen

Would this be helpful in masking the noise of a snoring husband?

It might help some if you have room on your mattress between you (we don’t), and his snoring isn’t rafter rattling (my husband’s was). Does he stop breathing periodically and then gasp for breath, and fall asleep easily during the day? Considering how loudly my husband snores (i had been sleeping in our guest room most nights for a couple of years), i had no misgivings as to how much relief i would get from just the fan. I was mainly looking for a way to minimize outside noises which it is fabulous at doing. What changed that (and i absolutely recommend this to anyone who is a chronic snorer) is to get your husband to a sleep clinic and get him on a cpap asap! We are in our 60’s and my husband has been a snorer since we were married 35 yrs. Ago. It went from very mild early on to near earth shattering over the years. I have begged him to get tested. ‘no way could i sleep with one of those things on my face!’. Our doctor had also pushed and pushed him to get tested for years. After the diagnosis, it just confirmed what i already knew: major sleep apnea. He had a heart attack 6 years ago at age 60, quad bypass surgery, high blood pressure, diabetes, prostate cancer (not related to the apnea, i assume). He’s had the cpap for less than a year and partnered with the lectrofan, i’ve never slept so well in my life. And he can now sleep on his back, his preferred sleep position, without waking me! He has a light weight, nostrils only ‘mask’ that doesn’t bother him at all. Considering the costs of going through what we did after his heart attack (fortunately he had health insurance at the time; now on medicare), the sleep test’s costs are just pennies. Don’t know your ages, but the damage done by apnea affects much more than just a good night’s sleep. The fan is just a band aid over a gaping, festering wound. Buy the fan; it’s awesome. But put the sleep test at the top of your priority list. It could add years to his life.

My bedroom is over an alleyway that has people coming through in the middle of the night crushing cans from recycling bins. Will this mask that?

Hello! I have two in my room, one on each nightstand, not because the volume of the conditioner is low, but because my fiancé and i like to have our own! I can’t speak to your exact situation, but i can tell you i don’t hear my neighbors (townhouse), or anything outside (barking dogs, cars, people, birds, garbage trucks, motorcycles). This sound conditioner has improved my sleep to the point that i don’t want to get up in the morning! It’s amazingly hypnotizing! It can be turned up pretty loud as well, that was my issue with other sound conditioners, not loud enough. I’d try one if i were you. You can always return it if it doesn’t help your situation, but i think you’d love it. It has seriously helped my sleep. Good luck!

In the description i do not see what the different sounds are. It says 10 fan sounds and 10 white noise sounds. Can you explain further?

Hello, there are 10 white noise sounds and 10 fan sounds. The fan sounds are a range from exhaust fan/ceiling fan/box fan/etc while the white noise has one that is kinda waves while the rest are different pitches. There is great depth in sound from low pitch to high on fan & white noise. You can crank the volume up pretty high and i had the buttons memorized in 1 night so i could change it in the dark. The sounds are all pretty real, but if you’re looking for something that has a lot of waves/waterfall/river sounds, this doesn’t really have that, but i don’t like those so i feel i have for once in my adult life found the perfect rig! I never checked to see if there was a used one for sale, but as there are no moving parts like fan models, i would think used would be a great way to save some dough. Good luck! Hope this helps.-rod

If it is ‘on’ and essentially unplugged through a alexa power switch, when it is ‘plugged’ back in will it still be on?

Yes. You should set up the soundstory and volume the way you like and then turn off the lectrofan with the power button on the upper-right corner of the front panel. This will save the current settings. The next time power is restored (or when you press the power button), the previously played soundstory and volume will be played. So, the next time a switched outlet is activated, the lectrofan will come on. This feature of coming on when power is applied can be turned off or on, as described in the user manual. By default, out of the box, this feature is on.

What is the wattage this machine runs (in kw/hr)? I need an energy efficient tool for sleeping.

Going by the ratings on the power supply it uses at most 5v at 500ma (with the device likely using less than the maximum rating of the power supply provided with it). Converting milliamps to amps makes it 0.5a. We can determine power (p) in watts using the following equation, p = iv, with i = current in amps (0.5a in this instance) & v = voltage (5v in this instance). As such, p = (5)(.5), p = 2.5 w. We can convert power in watts into kilowatt hours (kwh), represented as energy (e), using the following equation, e = pt/1000, with t representing time in hours (1 hour in this instance). As such, e = (2.5)(1)/1000, e = 2.5/1000, e = 0.0025 kwh. This device uses 0.0025 kwh of energy, which is a ridiculously small number, so it hardly uses any energy whatsoever.you would need to run this product non-stop for 24 hours to equal the amount of energy used by a 60w light bulb in 1 hour.

Can this machine be used without the timer? In other words, can it be set to run until manually turned off?

Yes! That is exactly how i use it. I turn it on when i go to bed at night and turn it off when i get up in the morning. Mine runs all night long. This is such a great little machine!

Does it have any lights on it?

It has no lights.

Would this be effective in blocking bass vibrations coming from nearby–say, from a nearby tv or a car stereo outside?

Personally, it does for me! I am a light sleeper but with this machine i do not wake up often anymore. So i would say yes it is able to block sounds out like that, especially if you have the volume turned up. My machine is never on max volume and i cannot hear anything that is going on outside.

How many settings are there for the volume?can i turn it up as loud as i want?

As loud as u want? What does that mean? You want it to be as loud as a rocket ship or metallic concert.i think it has lots of volume settings, 10 maybe. I put it as loud as it can go. Its louder than the other onei had. But i can’t tell you the exact decimals. Its loud enough for me. But i can’t tell you for sure its loud enoughfor everyone. Louder with anything always costs more money. If you want super loud you will probably have to look higher price range. Its all personal preference.

Can i plug it in an electrical outlet in my house, or do i need to have a computer to plug-in it? Does it consume a lot of electricity?

Yes. The cord ends in a usb port that is plugged into a two pronged charger that fits into the electrical outlet. Everything is included, you don’t have to buy anything extra just plug in to outlet in your house. Now if you wish to plug it into the computer you can just disconnect the usb plug from the charger and attach to computer.

My baby loves the sound of the hair dryer, to the point i have burned up the motor. So i am looking for a sound machine similar to the sound of a hair dryer. Does this come close?

Yes, several of the fan sounds would be like a hair dryer. Sample sounds here: http://www.lectrofan.com/#features

Any chance that it will block out road construction noise 25 yards from my bedroom?

I would give it a chance. I keep mine next to me on my nightstand. It does an amazing job at covering over other loud noises, and the volume control in it can make it really loud! I even have a belligerent man in the apartment complex across the street from me who comes out and holds extremely loud conversations at 11pm, 12pm, 1am, all the time. I can’t even hear him anymore because this machine does such a good job.

Can i turn the night light on and off from the app?

Yes. The app can control the brightness and color of the light and the light can also be turned off from the app.

Can this operate on batteries?

You can probably use a portable usb charger which has built-in batteries.

Love this product!

I was extremely hesitant to get a travel size white noise machine, but was extremely happy that i did. This white noise machine saved my life! The white noise machine has different modes to choose from (we use the fan option). Changing modes and volume are extremely easy! I also wanted to point out that the volume is surprisingly very loud for a product so small.

We’ve been using this since the baby was 16 weeks old. He was having so many issues with falling asleep and staying asleep during all of his naps (his naps were ranging from 20 minutes to 45 minutes). Once we purchased this white noise machine, he started napping for 1 hour to 2 hours sometimes. If we needed him to wake up earlier, we would just turn off the sound and he would just slowly perk up. It was like night and day. He’s 10 months now and it works just as well.

This also helps so much if you’re on the go! You just clip it to the side of the car seat or stroller.

I highly recommend all lectrofan products to all parents. This will change your life! Their also have an amazing customer service team for any issues you may encounter.

So far, we like it for the “attic fan” sound

We’ve had this little sleep noise maker for about a week and so far it works well. We like it especially for the “attic fan” sound which is the perfect noise for us. The machine has 2 categories for the sleep noise — “fan sounds” and “white noises”. The white noises include brown noise, as well. To find the various fan noises, you cycle up and down either one of the category buttons. Just read the directions. It’s easy. The volume control seems good, although it seems to be louder for the white noises than the fan sounds. Best of all (and unlike other sleep noise machines) it has no lights on it! For travel, i plan to use my iphone but i’m assuming this would be fine. It’s small and lightweight and has a usb plug. (happily, with an included charger.)

Train, what train?

We live close enough to a train that the noise would wake me up many nights. I hesitated to buy this because i didn’t think it would work – another gadget in the junk drawer kind of thing. However, since taking the leap, i’m kicking myself i didn’t do it sooner. I just use the one noise i found and liked, so no comment on the full range. I’m not sure which one i picked, but it works. It’s kind of fan/hvac, and it’s just perfect for me to sleep. The volume control works nicely too: i basically calibrated it over the first couple of nights, making it loud enough to block out the train, but not so loud it’s distracting or potentially drowns out things i want to hear (like my kids waking up, etc.).

One of my favorite amazon purchases!

I am almost a year in to my purchase of this noise canceller and i can say that after all of the purchases i have made on amazon, this is one of my favorites!
I purchased this noise canceler due to having issues with one of my neighbors that would have obscenely loud noise (music, parties, or arguing) going on at all hours of the night and this was soooo worth it.
I like the fact that you can toggle between different types of noise cancelations and sound frequencies (for sleeping and for private conversations) and i liked the timer feature where the noise would slowly time out after an hour. I wished that feature could last longer than an hour though, but i just ended up sleeping with the canceller on for the duration of night now. I make sure to keep it at a level that is comfortable for me, because i want to be in between being alert and being able to sleep peacefully and i have not had any issues with this product at all–even when it will eventually give out one day, i will purchase another one.
Another feature i like about this noise canceller is that it is compact, but effective. I keep it on the floor under my window and it’s approximately 1-3ft away from my bed and it’s easy to turn on/off in the dark and maneuver the settings once you get used to where everything is. I even got my sister to purchase one and she sleeps with hers on all night as well.

Husband couldn't wake me up lol

This little baby is amazing!!!!!!!
So i literally just got woken up. My husband tried to wake me up an hour ago and couldnt! I was sleeping poorly because we took out our window ac unit as the season is changing right now. I was used to the loud noise so switching back to only a regular box fan was just not the same. This thing put me right to sleep. The different fan settings are so nice. There were multiple i could see myself using. I don’t want to take away a star but if i did it would only be because i wish there was an l.e.d. Screen so i know what number sound i’m on for future use. My ears will have to do though hahahahah.
Tldr: don’t wait, buy this!

Bought for travel, has officially replaced fan at home

Purchased this as a gift for my husband, who has insomnia and is a light sleeper. Hes always needed to sleep with a fan; he tried a few of these noise machines but never liked them, saying that nothing could compare to a fan. Well, after a few trips where he took this little guy with us and had easier nights falling asleep, it has officially replaced the fan in our home!
There are so many settings/sound options, the volume control is great, and it’s the perfect size for both travel and a small bedside table.
Would highly recommend to all… Even those who may feel like fans are “the only option”.

5Expert Score
Yes… Definitely worth it

We have purchased lots of cheap sound machines over the years… And they either sound hollow and tinny or they stop working after a short period of time. (…if you have ever tried to wedge the cord around the volume knob on a homedics sound machine, then you know what i’m talking about.)

a few years ago, i decided to spend the extra money to try this sound machine, and we could not be happier with this model. So, when we had a need for a second sound machine (for a new location), we came right back to this one.

Here’s what you will love about this sound machine:
– it has a deep, full sound
– the sound variations let you find your ideal sound (i.e. We like a little more of a ‘fan’ noise instead of just ‘white’ noise)
– the unit is heavy enough that it does not get bumped around when you are trying to find your phone or glasses in the dark
– the volume can be set very loud–which comes in very handy when traveling to places with limited outlets
– it is a quality build that has survived multiple road trips and a few flights

definitely give this one a try.

Brown noise, who knew?

I’ve used a white noise machine for years now and i recently heard about brown noise so i immediately set out to find a brown noise machine. Quite honestly, i found the setting i liked right away so i haven’t even attempted to go through the other settings. There is something so soothing and relaxing about the depth of brown noise. It does an excellent job blocking out surrounding noises and i sleep very well with it. On the rare occasion i do wake up briefly in the middle of the night, the sound actually makes me feel happy and i go back to sleep smiling. I know that probably sounds odd but i’m serious, brown noise is the best!

Anxiety from neighbor noise pollution? This is the cure.

There is nothing i can tell any of you that the other reviews don’t say. Instead, i’ll offer my personal anecdote.

This device saved. My. Life. Well, not literally, but it definitely saved my sanity. I’m a highly anxious person who is extremely noise sensitive and vulnerable to sensory overload. Cue moving into my first college apartment, where the upstairs neighbors’ every footstep can be heard amplified and bass boosted through my ceiling. (of course, before i signed the lease, the landlord didn’t mention this… ‘feature’.) my room is right below their kitchen, so in addition to the stomping, i can hear all their yelling and banging around pots and pans all hours of the day and into the night. I was losing a lot of sleep over this, and it ramped up my anxiety tenfold. I felt like i couldn’t be at peace in my own home and dreaded having to come back here at all… My safe, comfortable space was constantly being violated by noise pollution and there was literally nothing i could do about it. As bitter as i was, my upstairs neighbors weren’t technically doing anything wrong, they were living their lives just like i am.

Anyway, i almost considered moving out or at least switching to an upstairs unit… That is, until i happened upon this amazing little device. I never cared for ‘white noise’ machines that wasn’t true white noise; ocean waves and rainfall isn’t as soothing when you have upstairs neighbors with lead for feet. You really need a good, loud, pure white noise that masks all frequencies and that your brain can easily ignore, so it seems as if there’s no noise at all. This thing was absolutely perfect for me, as it only had white noise and fan sounds (and a variety of ’em!) that can get loud enough to mask anything. I mean anything. I can now peacefully snooze through not only my neighbors’ stomping kitchen antics, but also the 8am garbage truck arriving bright and early every wednesday. I don’t wake up in the middle of the night anymore because my neighbor wants a midnight snack. I can come home after classes and enjoy an afternoon nap without disturbances. I sleep much more deeply and peacefully overall. And it’s all thanks to the lectrofan.

I’m telling you, if you can relate to my situation in the slightest, just don’t even worry about the cost. I would honestly pay double for this if i knew how much it would improve my quality of life. Please buy this. Please. Support this awesome product.

Still going strong after using it every night for 8 years.

A necessity for light-sleepers. It’s definitely worth the money to use this over trying to navigate through an app on your phone when half-asleep every night/morning. Very reliable. There’s a good selection of noises and volume levels, but i mainly stick to one setting.

Amazing! While it worked….

This sound machine was one of our favorites we’ve tried!! We own pricey snooz’s, 2 hatch’s, and a dohm. Sound wise, the snooz provides the most perfect fan / white noise sound (there’s literally no comparison)- but the lectrofan is right up there sound wise & completely surpasses the snooz in volume- for a much cheaper price! The lectrofan fan has a ton of sound options- which is such an added bonus. We enjoy a deep white noise / box fan type sound & the lectrofan provides that without the annoying “looped” sound!

We purchased our lectrofan when we moved into our new home in december- the snooz was no longer cutting it due to the loud(er) street noise at night & with a 3 month old, keeping night wakings at bay was top priority. We all fell in love with the lectrofan so much that we ended up buying multiple & unplugged all our old products! Unfortunately, the lectrofan that we use in our daughters nursery completely stopped working in less than 6 months! Now- it was used easily 13 hours a day (9-10 hours at night & about 3 total nap hours) for 6 months straight. But, our hatch’s and snooz has been around for many year and clocked twice the useable hours as the lectrofan and all still run without issues. I contacted customer service- troubleshooting is useless & the only info i was given was that it was past my 90day return policy.

I only gave 4 stars because i would hope that when spending $50 on a sound machine, you would receive a longer lifespan than 6 months. With that being said, we love the lectrofan soo much, we immediately purchased another one when the old one went out. And if this one dies again in 6 months, we’ll purchase another without hesitation!

Good product

I used this to make my home office soundproof to outsiders. It works well. I would buy it again.

Works great, made well!

The sounds this machine makes are mainly fan sounds, white and brown noises. It can be a bit industrial sounding and it would be nice if it had some natural sounds. That being said it’s solidly made and works great!

Good sound machine

Good sound machine for my baby. My only complaint is that it has a 1 hour timer button right below/ above the power button and you can accidentally hit that and then…. One hour after your baby is sound asleep the magic sound machine turns off and bam your baby is awake. Product flaw putting the buttons so close to each other for sleep deprived parents. If i could buy a new one w/ the buttons somewhere else i would. I recommend this sound machine over the hatch / other baby made sound machines.

Blocks sounds

My apartment is near the backdoor, so i would hear the comings and goings all night. Bought this and placed it on a stand at the head of my bed and no more stomping up and down stairs. It doesn’t block all sounds from above (like a noisy neighbor walking over you) but tvs, music, etc is throughly blocked and footsteps are quite diminished.

4Expert Score
Lasted 4 years

Spent a little more money this time because i was tired of how disposable these sound machines are. This one lasted four years of nightly use before it started cutting in and out and interrupting sleep. Good white noise options, solid performance until this week.
