It’s a christmas present so have not used it yet but all the feature make it great for my granddaughter.

We loved this cute design and my daughter loves interacting with it. She does everything from listen to music to asking it questions. Great gift idea!

Biggest upgrades/changes from echo dot kids 4th gen (2020) to echo dot kids 5th gen (2022):

-speaker: now 1.73-inch speaker with improved bass/low end, previous version was 1.6-inch
-temperature/motion sensors: now with temperature and motion sensors echo dot can trigger routines based on detected motion or changes in room temperature.
-eero wifi extender: supports eero “built-in”, works as a wifi extender for eero mesh networks, supporting up to 10 additional devices and up to 100mbps speeds.
-accelerometer/tap: now can trigger actions with a tap, like stopping alarm
-no line out: removed 3.5mm line out port from the back
-weight: now 10.7 oz, previous version was 12 oz
-appearance: now in dragon and owl designs, previous version was panda and tiger

kids version thoughts:

this kids version is just a regular echo dot 5th generation (2022), with a cool design on the fabric exterior (purple dragon or teal owl), a 2-year warranty, and an included 1-year of kids+ service. Currently kids+ service is $48/ year for prime members (or $4.99 billed monthly), so this is actually a great deal if you were going to subscribe to kids+. This seems to be the cheapest option for kids devices that include a free year of kids+. This device is only $10 more than a regular echo dot, while the kids versions of the tablets are $50 more than the regular tablet or kindle.

We personally haven’t found the kids+ service to be as useful or impressive on the dot, since you get the most out of the service when using it on a fire tablet. But keep in mind the kids+ service can be used across different devices, so if you do have fire tablets for example, you will be able to use kids+ on those too even if you just buy this dot. This could be a great option for anyone that wants to try out the service for a year.

Thoughts about echo dot 5th gen (2022) family in general:

-the speakers have been upgraded, now with more focus on low end and bass volume. I have tested out a few different types of music, and i would agree that there is noticeable improvement, but really the speaker is still too small to be very impressive. The sound is not even close to a regular echo device, let alone higher quality speakers. I appreciate the improvement here, but i still wouldn’t choose to listen to music on these on a regular basis, especially at high volume where there is a bit of distortion.

-i like the ability to be able to trigger routines based on temperature and motion, and stopping alarms by tapping is also a nice feature. These additions offer many more useful automation options, and now having multiple echo devices with temperature sensors can help identify differences in room temperature throughout the house.

-the eero wi-fi extender ability could actually be very useful for some people that need to extend the range of their network. This was easy to configure with the eero app, and it seems to be working well so far.

Overall, this is a nice little upgrade from the previous version. The speaker/sound improvement is nice, but not the biggest deal since these echo dots are still not the best choice for high volume music. The sensors and eero extender features are the biggest improvements, and these changes add so much extra functionality to an already useful smart speaker. The lack of an audio-out port is the only downgrade, but that might be important to some people.
