What are our customers saying?
Of all the smart tv devices i’ve used, this is my favorite (including apple tv, fire tv, roku). The set up is smooth, and it controls the tv seamlessly after autodetecting the model. The interface surfaces interesting content to me from all my services without needing to do much and connects to my other google assistant products for voice control, which turned out to be more useful than i expected. The remote is much more intuitive than apple tv, and i appreciate that it includes dedicated buttons for volume and turning off the tv. If you use youtube tv, this also has the best integration i’ve seen to enable casual channel surfing alongside on demand streaming.
My main feedback for things that could be improved: there’s sometimes a delay from pressing a button on the remote for the first time to the tv responding (probably an idle power save feature?) and home page of what to watch doesn’t sync with the apps reliably (i will continue to get recommended shows to watch in netflix that i already finished in the app). Overall still my favorite device and would recommend it to everyone.
Bought this because i needed a way to connect my android phone to my new samsung tv. We’ve been casting to it regularly from a windows laptop, a chromebook, and an android phone. Sometimes we have to click the connect button twice to get it to work, but otherwise it’s been very good.
Also, i started using the google tv apps instead of my samsung tv’s built-in apps for hulu and prime video, and i noticed something: when i watch tv shows on my samsung apps, i have to keep turning the volume up to hear the dialogue, but then turn it down again when the background music and sound effects get loud to keep from waking up my kids. But when i watch on my google tv apps, i don’t have to do that. I don’t know if it has some kind of leveling or compression software built in, but i don’t have to keep riding the volume button.
Also, there is an ambient mode that allows me to use my google photos as a screensaver. It gave me the option to choose photos by names of people in them, or by albums, or my favorites, so now when we’re not watching a show, we can have pictures of my kids scrolling on the screen, which has been a lot of fun to watch.
We’ve been using one of the first versions of chromecast for years, but since we start using more often a projector i started to think that this smart version would be a better solution (and it’s annoying to move the one we have every day). I am extremely pleasantly surprised by its speed and ease of use. I tested it with two projectors – on one it even automatically started to command it – turn it on and off, and adjust the sound, on the other, it’s probably a matter of setting, but i haven’t tried to set it up yet. In summary – i recommend!
What can i say!!! I have always been a huge fan of alexa, fire tv, fire tv cube, echo and everything in between but i cheated and i am glad that i did! An effortless, immediate set up process from customization to streaming (what fire tv lacks) and i couldn’t be happier.
I now question my decision to refund the security deposit i put down on an apartment because it had built it google home and not alexa! Side note: the apartment building was art deco in architecture, perfectly renovated and the lobby had original tiffany domed stained glass.
I like it , i am not too good with the set up especially the part of copying the code from your phone to tv , i was lost . It took some time to get it , but when you get it done you would love it . If you ‘re watching the youtube video , you can use both your phone or remote control to operate . I do like it a lot , i give it 5 stars
This product was an inexpensive way to make our tv ‘smart’! We subscribe to youtube tv and this remote pairs well with that. I like the fact that you don’t need the tv remote to control the volume and/or turn the tv on and off because the chrome remote does this as well.
I am a google fan boy and have google devices all over the house due to the google smart home ecosystem. This version of the chromecast is easily the best value for money device turning any monitor/dumb tv into a smart tv with a very user friendly ui. 10/10 will recommend.
It’s an extremely well-made product that there if you have the streaming services is fantastic. If you don’t well you have to go through commercials on certain stuff and certain things you can’t see. But i love it. I’m very happy with it. The only problem i have if you wanna call the problem is the remote controls way too sensitive. And i mean way too sensitive. I don’t know if i can adjust that but if that’s the worst of my problems i’m happy
Be sure to check out my video review in the review section above!
Google’s chromecast was a bit of a game changer when it was first released in 2013. Although it lacked an interface and required a smartphone to work it was very popular due to its low cost of entry – it sold for about a third of what other tv boxes cost at the time.
Today there are many super low cost tv devices that have much greater functionality which is why it looks like google is phasing out its single purpose chromecast device in favor of a more robust android based platform called google tv. Last year they released a google tv for 4k televisions and now they have an hd only version priced competitively versus similar offerings from roku and amazon.
While it retains the casting features from the original chromecast it adds the google tv functionality which allows for the installation of apps and games. It also works as a google assistant allowing for voice control of home automation devices.
Performance-wise it’s about the same as the google tv 4k edition they released last year but costs a lot less. Google limits the video output on the hd model to 1080p only but it otherwise retains all of the features of the more expensive version including its support of atmos surround sound.
Google tv is an enhancement of android tv found on many smart televisions and set top boxes. Those enhancements come in the way of recommendations based on your personal preferences and a watch list feature to organize content across many different providers.
The only shortfall with its recommendation and watch list feature is that it’s not quite universal. While netflix has a button on the remote and is pre-installed on the chromecast when it first boots up, you can’t actually add netflix content to the watchlist nor will it include any netflix content in its recommendations.
But for the price it’s a solid offering especially if you’re tied into the google home ecosystem. Android tv’s app ecosystem is substantial and you’ll find some of the games you may own on your smartphone will also appear in your app library on the chromecast.
I’d been using the ‘old’? ‘regular’? Chromecast unit for a couple years on my 32in scepter. Then i bougt a fancy new 50in 4k set, same brand (they do great picture quality for the price) not-smart set. Then i noticed that the chromecast unit was 1080p. Bothered me after a while, so on prime day, i broke down and bought the upgrade. (for some reason, google home had to call it ‘attic tv’, giving me no choice on the naming. I was concerned about google tv, but it turns out that it is really easy to use, and gave me an opportunity to access more streaming services than the ones i pay for. Pluto and tubi are free and have some good programming. And annoying commercials. But they’re there with one click of the remote. As are all my other subscriptions. I use the remote, and not my phone. There’s big buttons for youtube and netflix. Netflux is wasted space for me, but the onscreen interface is excellent. Picture and sound quality is excellent. I haven’t hooked up the voice interface, so maybe google isn’t listening to me yelling at the dogs. One thing i like, it seems the unit shuts off after not being used. The old unit was always on. Access that source, and you always got the screen saver. But, for some reason, the clock on the screensaver is 2 hours off, and i can’t find any way to change it, either onscreen settings or google home app. So, yes. I recommend this product. I’m glad i bought it. Casts pictures and videos from my phone no problem, too. And, apparently, there are no streaming services it will not access. You do your browsing snd searching on the big screen, instead of on the phone snd then cast your choice. (i have a horror story from trying a cheap knockoff. I refused to send that one back, and got them to refund my money anyway. It was made to collect informaion, and your watching tv was secondary. (more than google? That’s a question.) i did have to input my passwords to this interface. But they make that easy, too. Been finding i have to reboot the unit about weekly. Suddenly, it will just stop connecting to the services. Home page looks normal. No warning or instructions. So i have to keep the plug easy to reach. You only get 5 minutes on ‘pause’ before the unit disconnects. Then it disconnects. Usually just takes one click to resume, but sometimes you have to sign back in to the server. That can be a pain. But it’s a small thing, overall.
I love my google tv. I can download tons of different apps to it that can work with it and just sign into my accounts. My only issue that i’ve ever had with the google tv is that for some reason it wouldn’t let me cast my netflix account from my phone. Did it with my old chromecast but didn’t like to do it from this one. Actually made me sign into my netflix account through my google tv. But other than that everything else has worked just perfectly.
Found it a bit frustrating at first. When i put the batteries into the remote, i accidently hit the power button on the front and shut it off. This interrupted the setup prompts, and the insert just said to follow the prompts to set up. Had to google how to fix problem, needed to unplug from the wall for a minute then start over. Now that everything is set up, works well.
For the most part, i really like the google chromecast tv. I have several smart tvs and roku devices in the past so i had my own expectations going in. The device could use a little more processing power or possibly ram. It’s a little slow and jittery from time to time but not enough to ruin the experience. The remote is a little awkward to use if you’re in a dark room and need to rely on the feel of the remote. It’s just awkward and unintuitive. The ui is pretty good and i think it’s pretty easy to navigate and find what you need. Overall it’s a pretty cheap and decent solution. It gets the job done.
Perfect for bringing new life to older, outdated tv’s. I’m looking at you samsung tvs not giving updates and removing apps like youtube. With this, you can have whatever apps you want and even add iptv for free channels. My complaint would be basically the fact most tv usb ports are not going to be able to power it, so an extra cable, but at least it’s usb c. Also, even when it launched it was a low powered device, they should really release an updated version with better performance, higher storage and that works with higher internet speed. Currently it tops off at around 80-90mps. Regardless, it is still a pretty good bang for the bucks as a casting device + google tv.
One thing i’d recommend is getting a cover sleeve for the remote, if your planning to use the white one.
I used to be able to control volume with my ipad but can’t with this version of chromecast. I went from using 0 remotes to needing 2 remotes like it’s 1987 or something. I was planning on putting it on all of my tvs but won’t now. Glad i only bought 1 to test it.
It is nice to have the apps load through the chromecast rather than having to control them with my ipad, and the buttons on the chromecast remote are easy to use/navigate. The “ask google” function comes in handy and doesn’t interfere with the program you’re watching.
I bought a westinghouse a while back and wanted to be able to use it as a monitor for specifically youtube videos. It’s pretty easy to setup; some futzing around to link up to your smartphone. The remote is just ok but i would have preferred arrows vs the circle radius (personal preference). It gives me what i absolutely need (to make a non-smart tv access the web.
I cut the cable and went to youtube tv using this device. This works seamlessly with youtube tv. The voice activated remote is nice for going quickly to a network but it sometimes becomes unresponsive.
Like that my galaxy works, and i dislike immensely the remote control
