Is it refrigerated? Can i put a drink in it with no ice being made?

I’m thinking you’re under the impression that this is a refrigeration unit. It’s not. It is a free standing ice maker only. It has a small compressor that makes ice rapidly. If there is no water in it it shuts itself off. When off it will not keep anything cool. The only time it’s cool or cold is when it’s making ice.

Does this ice maker have to be attached to a faucet or is the water put directly into the machine?

You pour the water directly into the ice maker. No hookups. It has a ‘fill line’ inside to show how much water to put in it..

How do you clean the parts you cant reach? There is mold in the back part under the metal elements

This answer is not particular to this machine. I used 2 of these ice makers in germany for several years and found that using distilled water prevented mold growth. This was an accidental finding, after fussing to clean pink mold that kept growing. Never had anymore after using distilled. We had no ac in germany, so a house with ac is probably better.

How do i find out about tbe heavy-duty one?

If you do a search for the 40 pound per day ice maker you will find it. Https://www.amazon.com/frigidaire-maker-clear-cubes-capacity/dp/b077mt8tjv/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2kcrzt53pdtqz&dchild=1&keywords=40+pound+ice+maker&qid=1609167752&sprefix=40+pound+ice%2caps%2c244&sr=8-3

My ice tastes bad. Any suggestions? Like almost a freezer burnt metallic taste

Hi carmen, did you rinse the water compartment thoroughly before using? Also, one or two cycles may be necessary to clean the unit.

Is this opal nugett sonic ice

No, you have to buy an opal ice maker to get that style. All inexpensive ones make hollow tubes of ice.

Is this the same ice maker sam’s club sells for $89? It looks the same.

My sam’s club does not offer this model.

110v or 220v ?

110v

Does it last very long?

The previous model lasted me 2.5 years continuously. Only issue is after about 6 months it started making a loud grating sound for about 3 seconds each cycle so about every 9 minutes unless the basket was full.

Does this contain refrigerant? It says compressor cooled but i purchased another ice make that said the same thing and it did contain refrigerant.

No. The one i purchased i returned because it was worthless. It made about a cup of ice in 8 hours and the cubes started melting almost immediately after dropping.

Whats the amp draw on this? Want it for a boat, dont want to kill the batteries

The unit is designed to be plugged into a 120v 60 hz 15a circuit.

This was delivered on its side inside it was marked keep up right. Will this affect the unit or should i just mail it back for return?

You will ruin the condenser if unit is not upright – it has to do with the refrigerant being in the right place. Set it upright for 24 hours before using. Same with refrigerators and air conditioners. Keep upright. If it has been on its side or upside down, set it upright and wait 24 hours before turning it on.

Troubleshoot the machine is leaking on the counter

Pull the basket out. In the bottom of the reservoir there is a little plug. Make sure that is down all the way. It’s a drain plug.

Troubleshoot the ice maker is leaking and the drain plug is all the way in?

Just run the water thru and watch it work i never have experienced leaking issues

Can this be ran 24 hours a day? Looking at an ice machine for my assisted living and want one that will last. We would be running approx 12 hrs a day

The unit can be used 24 hrs a day – as long as the ice is regularly emptied and the water is refilled.

Does it make clear ice?

The unit does not make clear ice.
The cloudiness of ice is caused by air in tap water.

How much ice would a gallon of distilled water make ?

It would be about a gallon zip-lock bag full. About every 10 minutes it makes 9 ice cubes a little bigger than the tip of your thumb from the first joint. – the model i received only had one size and the person i gave it to didn’t need it for long.

How do u change the setting to make it small or large ice

Mine has two settings for ice. Small and large. This is on the efic189-b ice maker

If ice is already in there do you keep adding water so you dont run out of ice?

No, once it fills the basket, it quits making ice. If it it full, it will stop until the ice melts enough to tell the sensor it can start up and make more. If it needs water, a red light will turn on. The water will last through a couple of cycles/ hours.

Should i keep the lid open or closed overnight ?

Leaving the lid open over night would allow dust to fall into the interior – and any ice left in the ice basket will melt more quickly.

Important helpful points and pros and cons

We are always running out of ice and this has solved the problem. I wish i would have bought this a long time ago.

This ice maker is excellent and will delivery the 26 lbs. Of ice per day. What a lot of people don’t understand about countertop ice makers is that when the ice is made it is about 27 degrees and the ice maker is not a storage freezer. Think of it like the ice that was just made will sit in the ice maker which is like keeping ice in a cooler. It won’t get colder it will just slowly melt and then gets turned back into ice again.

Keep in mind when you pull ice out of your kitchen freezer that has been in there for several hours it is around 0 degrees vs. The 27 degrees right out of the countertop ice maker. So, ice from your freezer is going to last a lot longer in a drink than ice out of this countertop ice maker. So, that may not be ideal for some if you are having a drink outside on a hot day and not using an insulated cup. For best results take the ice out of the countertop ice maker and put it in a gallon ziplock bag and place it in the freezer for a little while so it will get down to the 0 degrees. That is not necessary though. The ice that comes right out of the machine is plenty cold enough for drinking beverages indoors. If you want to use the ice outdoors just place the ice in an insulated cup.

Pros:
very quality built machine.
Very easy to use.
It uses lights to notify you of the status rather than annoying beeps.
It really does make 26 lbs. Of ice in an hour.
First ice in about 8 minutes.
Full basket of ice in about an hour.
Pauses itself when ice basket is full and will resume ice production automatically as soon as some ice is removed.
Light comes on when water needs to be added (keep in mind you still have a full basket of ice when this triggers).
Melts very slowly and if you leave it on over night it only comes on once or twice to replace the ice that melted.
Quite operation.
It doesn’t take up a lot of countertop space so we are able to leave it out and it matches our stainless steel fridge.
It comes with a nice ice scoop which is great for parties.
This ice maker keeps dropping ice every 8 minutes.
The cord is very long so it doesn’t have to be right up against the outlet.

Cons:
the only con i have about the machine is trying to drain the water remaining when you are done using it. There is a drain plug underneath it that is a little tricky to use because you can’t see underneath the machine and you can’t just turn the machine upside down to drain it per their instructions. That will harm the machine.

What i found to be a great solution is instead of using the drain plug i use a microfiber towel to soak up all the water left in the machine. That only takes a quick second and you don’t have to move the ice maker over the sink to drain it. I then leave the lid open to make sure it dries out. So it really isn’t a con if you use the microfiber towel. It is so easy this way which means i never mind using the machine even to make a small amount of ice.

Why did i wait so long? Yea to having ice.

I finally bit the bullet this hot summer and based on a review of countertop ice makers made this purchase. It had a good rating, decent price and a name that i trust. I find that i only have to make cubes once a week (single person). I do drink out of yeti cups so that helps the ice last longer. I did see there were complaints that the ice is wet. I solved this problem by emptying the ice into 2 gallon zip lock bag in the freezer. When it is nearly full – do the typical slapping of the bag on the kitchen floor and then put the ice into an ice bin. I have to agree with another review that the drain plug is tough to pull out but better that than leaking problems. This machine beats emptying ice trays or getting home only to remember you forgot to buy ice – or you did pay for it and forgot to get it out of the ice bin. My daughter already wants to borrow it for her next party.

Fantastic product!!

This little ice maker is the best investment we’ve made in quite some time. We didn’t buy a bag of ice all summer. It’s already paid for itself. We keep a cooler of iced beer & pop on our covered patio all spring & summer and put this little gem on the shelf under it. It makes ice so quick it’s amazing. I keep one large bag in the freezer and one on the beer & pop. It was a fathers day gift to my husband who used to pay $6 for a bag of ice every cpl of days. It’s so easy to fill, empty and clean. You will love it!!

Works like magic

We purchased a new fridge earlier this year and found it does not make ice like our old one did! Like, only small cubes and at about a quarter of what we were used to. So i purchased this and i have loved it ever since! Living in southern arizona and dealing with major heat i had to purchase bags of ice just to keep my family of 6 cool and hydrated! This machine makes ice very quickly! Like in like 8 minutes! They are not large pieces of ice, but they are frequent! If i was standing by all day, i could fill our freezer with ice before our icemaker in the fridge could make 2 rounds of ice!

5Expert Score
Makes ice!!

Read lots of reviews and had the same need as others, didn’t want to have to keep buying ice at the store. As noted the cubes will start to melt a little because the storage area is not a freezer, but as long as you keep an eye on it and empty frequently you will be fine. For the money this is a good ice maker.

This thing saved my family

After we purchased a new refrigerator, we discovered it could no longer keep up with the ice usage in our house. Nooooooo…. The arguments over who used all the ice, god help me. Although i really didn’t want yet another appliance on my limited counter space, this is totally worth it! We are never without ice. You can hear it run, but i don’t think its any louder then the microwave. You can hear the ice drop, but it’s not any louder then the ice maker in the freezer. Without the argument of who used all the ice, our house is pretty quiet and the ice dropping into the holding container didn’t scare me. Initially the ice tasted a little like plastic, as to be expected. We refilled the water twice and the taste went away. Follow the directions to set up the unit.

Ice in an instant.

I bought this as a gift for my son who has everything but this ice maker for his backyard party area and kitchen, so people don’t have to go through the house for ice for their drinks in the bar area. They truly enjoy it, and it was great to find something they didn’t already have to give them.

5Expert Score
One of our best amazon purchases!!!

We purchased this after our in refrigerator ice maker leaked and ruined our kitchen floor. This ice maker is easy to use and makes a lot of ice, it does not keep ice cold so you need to transfer it to the freezer. We love it!

5Expert Score
Customer service center difficult to navigate

Product worked great for about 4 months then it didn’t. After sending pictures and communicating with customer service for several weeks, they want me to mail the ice maker to them at my expense. Not happy at all!

Great countertop ice maker

It does make a little noise, but that is to be expected. I noticed it makes more noise if on an unlevel surface. Ice starts out small, but once it gets going to ice is the perfect size. I get enough ice after a few hours for a weekend camping trip. Just don’t forget to empty the little tray when it is full or it stops making ice.

Be mindful of limited warranty

We bought this frigidaire countertop ice maker (exact as pictured) in february 2022. Review written in october 2022. Product still works well, however, when i had an issue i found out that the frigidaire website did not recognize the model on their website or any other countertop ice makers. I was not able to register the product or access any information. When i looked on the back of the ice maker i saw curtisinc.com and wondered if i’d been scammed. Apparently manufacturing (china) and ‘support’ (canada) goes through curtisinc. The warranty is limited to 30 days. I was able to resolve the issue after searching youtube. Make sure you regularly (once a month) clean the ice maker and use it’s cleaning cycle. Took me about 45 minutes (after the 20 min cycle) to clean it. Clean the vent and van also. I used q-tips and vinegar.
We always recycle the first batch of ice cubes back into the water reservoir as they are very tiny. It would’ve been nice to have the ice maker insulated as the newly dropped ice is very wet. Putting those into a bin in the freezer causes a huge lump of ice freezing together. We had to get a countertop maker as our apartment complex refused to properly clean the ice maker in the refrigerator and that ice tastes like mold.
This ice maker does the job and makes a lot of ice. It’s quiet, you can hear the ice drop so you can keep up.
I would recommend it, i know from other reviews, that it’s a gamble especially with a limited warranty. If you buy one run it hard for a few days-week maybe to test durability.

Makes ice in 9 min and 24 seconds

I read all the reviews and i watched videos and everyone said it was under 6 minutes. I set this up, added in my filtered water, and set the clock counter to see just how long it really takes. I did 5 tests and they all made ice in 9.24 not under 6 min. Seeing as though it takes over 8 hours for my ice tray to make ice, i’m still happy. I went through and cleaned the product first and noticed how hard it is going to be to get to those metal posts that make the ice. That concerns me a little bit. The self cleaning option would be nice like i saw on other models, but having seen this up close and person, not really understanding what a true self cleaning would actually do.
All in all, right now i am happy. Every time it drops ice i move the ice into my freezer bin.
Having to make ice when i have a big fancy fridge that is supposed to do the job, isn’t great. But this made my options so much better. Sick of ice trays that crack and leak. And sick of keeping my freezer full of ice trays. I look forward to making 3 pounds of ice a day with this.

4Expert Score
Great alternative to constantly purchasing bagged ice

While i have a newer fridge with the fancy built in ice machine, i also have a husband that doesn’t usually finish the projects promised (such as adding the water hookup). I myself am not at all verses in any area of plumbing, so me attempting would undoubtedly lead to the need for fixes, which like projects, never seem to get finished. That being said, this little gadget has come in pretty handy!

While i could just have gotten ice trays for a fraction of the price, (a) i’m inpatient and don’t want to wait the eternity for those to freeze and (b) don’t always/ever want the huge ice cubes in my drinks. I know, there are smaller ones, but been there, tried them, still took too long when i finally remembered to refill the trays. Anyways, on the the important pro/con list:

pro:
– 2 sizes, both same shape, just slightly different in size
– small enough to keep on the counter without being in the way.
– first batch comes out pretty quickly, and follow-up batches don’t take too long either.
– plug under the fill area, so you can empty it once done without having to turn whole machine upside down (or leave it in there to get gross)
– kids love watching the little arm push the ice into the bucket once frozen

neutrals:
– water reservoir doesn’t hold much, so you need to refill frequently if you are constantly making ice
– ice basket is also smaller so needs to be emptied frequently as ice is produced
-machine doesn’t get super cold, so ice can sweat, which will lead to it sticking together a bit of you move to freezer after

cons:
-cleaning looks like it could be an issue, unless you have really tiny hands to get in all the tight spots

considering the size and cost of it, i would definitely recommend.

If you can empty once an hour, its fantastic!

I’ve owned this for a week now. Here’s my take on it. If you can swing by once an hour to empty the hopper into a container in your freezer, it’s great. That said, if you don’t have time to sit and babysit this bad boy, the ice in the hopper will melt and you have to start back over and wait awhile to get ice. I’m in construction in texas.. Its freaking hot here like anywhere else in the summer. I use a ton of ice in my water jug and the cooler. Every night when i get home i have to set a timer for 1 hour and just swing by and empty the hopper and fill the water reservoir, until i go to bed in order to have enough ice for the next day. On my day(s) off i’ll try and spend as much time filling up bags of ice. I bought myself a box of 8lb bag ice bags. In a week, i’m up to three 8lb bags, of reserve ice. I’m not sure how anyone claims this can do 26lbs in 24hrs. Realistically… 9 cubes, every 7 minutes… The hopper holds 9 rounds… 81 cubes. It takes an hour to do that. You can math it from there…. Final take… For $130 and not having to wait on conventional ice trays it’s worth the money, if you have the patience. It’s not loud while it’s running, and it’s pretty easy to use. Just have to babysit it.

Ice maker works fine

Bought this as a supplement for our fridge ice maker. Starts dropping ice within 10 minutes. My wife is an ice chewer and she loves the ice it makes. If you move the made ice to your freezer you need to stir it up after about a minute or the ice will stick together in a mass. The reservoir has a small drain plug under the unit that is a pia. I don’t know yet about longevity but it serves a good purpose so far.

It’s good but came missing a part

The item arrived and works well but was missing a couple foot pegs. So it’s wobbly. It felt like it was a return item that they resent out to me. Wish i had a way to contact seller to get the missing parts.

4Expert Score
Great for ice chewers

This product is ideal for people who like to chew ice. Makes ice in 6 mins so it’s melts fast. Doesn’t matter if it’s in a yeti or hydro flask it will melt in less than 5 mins. Other than that, i love it

4Expert Score
What it really does

I like it and it performs as advertised but be aware of what it really does. It is not like making ice in your freezer. The unit only cools when it is making ice. The cubes drop into an ice bucket and at that point it’s not much different from a cooler. Gradually the ice melts and the water is returned to the reservoir. Eventually the machine will refill the ice bucket when the cubes at the bottom have melted down enough that there is room for more ice to go in at the top. Also, the ice that comes out of your freezer will probably be around 0 degrees fahrenheit. The ice out of this ice maker is not as cold and won’t have as much cooling as ice out of your freezer.

4Expert Score
Great little ice maker

Have to empty the ice asap into the freezer once each batch is made or it melts in the basket. Then it’s just recirculated over and over. Makes about 10 cubes every 5-10 minutes. Can make 2 different sizes. No funny taste. Super easy to use, quiet and clean. Fits easily on the counter under a cabinet.

4Expert Score
Easy ice but sticks sometimes

Great job making ice. But sometimes it pushes the ice out and it settles in front of the sensor so there is more room for more ice in the bin but it settles in the front so it stops making ice. Not too bad just a little annoying. Overall makes a lot of ice. We fill it with spring water gallon jugs and works great.
