How to remove old water filter
Without knowing the model of your refrigerator i don’t know how you get to the filter cartridge. Look in the owners manual for that if you don’t already know. Actually, that should tell you about the removal of the old filter too.
Anyway, slightly push the old filter in and turn counter clockwise about 1/4 turn. Remove and replace with the new filter reversing the procedure. There is no need to turn the water off.

It all depends on your water consumption. Most fridges will present a warning for when to replace your water filter. Myself personally, my frigidaire will go about 4-5 months with a new filter.
