I have been using the opal 2 for about a week now, and really like the machine. I decided to get this product mainly because it makes chewable ice, it can run on a schedule that you set with your phone, and i got tired of fixing the ice maker in my fridge. At first i was concerned that i might need to run it 24/7 due to ice melting, but in that quantity i have come to see ice in the machine over 8 hours after it was turned off (most was melted). But since this product reuses the melted water for next time i can get away with scheduling the machine to turn off at 8pm and still have ice waiting if i get up in the middle of the night.

Some things i spotted that hopefully will help others:

1) sometimes the machine says add water even though the tank is full. This is due to tube heights at the back where there isn’t enough differential to allow the tank to drain. Simply pick up the tank as high as you can, if you hear the glub glub and see large bubbles go by then you are all set, otherwise tip the tank a bit to help get the flow going. Apparently you can prime the pump inside the unit too but what’s simplier than picking something up?

2) for some reason the smart hq app has a password character limit of 20. But if you log into their website to create your username and password, it allows you to enter much more than 20 characters. If you attempt to use a password longer than 20 characters, the so called smart app will truncate your password and as a result will fail to log in.

3) syncing the opal 2 to the smarthq app did not go smoothly at first (probably due to #2 above) and i ended up with the opal on the network but the rest of the setup was missed (and the app told me that). So the fix was to remove the device from the app. The current state of the smart hq app makes this a little strange, like you are staring right at the delete option and yet it’s not labeled so. I’m sorry but i forget where it was, enough button mashing on your phone and you’ll figure it out. Once i got the device deleted and knew about #2 above, the setup was smooth. One thing that ge really needs to do is also print the connection information on the sticker in the back of the device as supplement material in their bom. Unless you read what was on the sticker you won’t know there is something you need to read from the back of the unit, and if you have this thing under the cabinets it’s not really convenient to get your head back there so that you can type random character into your phone. So ge get with the times, you wasted all that paper on that thing you call an owners manual, at least put that paper to good use and print something your customers will need.

Update – so after pulling off the back panel & trying everything under the sun to get the water tank to start flowing again, my husband noticed the little pump balloon looked clogged. So with a few quick succession of squeezes, water started flowing again. We descaled it using vinegar & through cleaning cycles for about 2 hours. We also used a straw brush to descale the inside of the tubing on the back of the machine. We stopped cleaning when there was no more scale visible in the water. All the issues we were having are resolved. It’s quiet and making ice quickly & nicely chewable. Lol from now on, we will descale each week to keep it clear. A small task given how much we love the ice. Did i mention we love the ice nuggets? Loved this machine for about a month. Then it began screeching like a cat being killed. Then it started making other strange noises. Ice wasn’t made as often. Sometimes not at all. Constantly on defrost. We’ve tried everything to clean it, remove scale & all the other things in the booklet to address these issues to no avail. Now it won’t run water through it when there is water in the reservoir. I’m beyond frustrated. We found a lot of people on diff sites abs even yt to address the same issues we had but it’s been useless. Ge warranty is very limited so if they say we did something wrong (like what tho bc we’ve done everything we read in the booklet) we’re out the money. I will call but have my doubts. I wish it worked.

We use a lot of ice in our house and refrigerator ice maker can not keep up. I have timer on app set to turn on at 7am and off at midnight everyday.
Pro: plenty of ice made for drinks for a couple of people. Easy to use with an auto shutoff so does not over flow. Any unused ice melts into water bin on bottom to be used the next cycle.
Ice is soft ice and easy to chew.
Con: ice is soft ice and melts quite a bit if a room temperature drink is poured onto the ice.
Ice is dumped (made) towards the back of the container so it shows full even if bin is only 1/2 full in front. If you scoop ice to front of container it will continue to make ice until full.
Bottom line: yes i would buy this again or an upgrade with a larger water bin on the side. It is amazing how fast you use the water up in the side bin if you use ice like our family does.

I purchased this for my wife who eats ice every day ‘research it if you want and you’ll find out why’. Since 2013ish we made monthly trips to sonic to buy a bag or 2 bags of ice. This investment saves us a trip, 20+ minutes in the drive through and a possible ‘sorry, we can’t sell ice right now’. As long as you pull the ice forward, it’ll make a pound an hour without fail.

Where has this been all my life?! I eat so much ice i have cut down on food and pop (a real plus). One thing if you get this, get an insulated cup to help with melt. Also, the add on tank is a real must.

When the receptacle gets full, i empty the ice into my ice maker in the fridge/freezer where it keeps it frozen solid and i use that ice for drinks bc it melts slower. The ice from the ice maker i use to make frozen drinks or just to chew on and it’s soft like sonic ice!!! Highly recommend.

We love it! I thought we would like it, but we all love it, and use it non-stop. It cured us of a decades long diet coke habit. We bought an r.o. Countertop water filter aquatru connect and use reverse osmosis water in the ice machine to prevent hard water buildup and improve taste. We love both. Highly recommend.

I bought this for my wife for her birthday. This nugget ice maker did not disappoint. Within about 20 minutes of turning it on, it starts dropping the first pieces of ice. Somewhere between 2-3 hours the bin is full. To minimize scaling, we’ve been using distilled water.

This is a must have if you love sonic ice worth it. Only draw back is once the ice is made it will melt if you don’t empty tray wish it stayed cold longer and didn’t let the ice melt.

It’s quick at making ice! Like it says in 15 min is starts making ice. We turn it on 2 hours before a party and we have a full bin of perfectly crunchy ice! I read comment that this thing is loud but honestly it’s not as loud as our refrigerator making ice lol. It was easy to set up and easy to clean. We love it and it’s great that we can have a sonic blast at home!

Have to clean twice a month or for sure once a month. Accumulates mold quickly and i only use bottle water.

Definitely the best quality ice i’ve had, it’s used pretty consistently all day every day. It can be loud at times though it’s mostly during its self cleaning cycle.

Best nugget ice you can get from your countertop. Reverse osmosis water keeps the descaling and loud noises to a minimum, however you still need to flush out and clean the system from time to time. Watch the you tube videos on why you need to clean the system. It is horrific.

Wifi enabled system lest me automate the ice making time which is great. I program it make ice in the middle of the night and then in the afternoon to keep up with the demand. Easy to just press the power button to make more when needed.

I do love it, but can’t say it is a great value.

So we love this ice maker, this is the second one we have owned by ge, and it makes great ice. It has a defrost mode that helps keep it working and makes this awful squeaking noise. This can’t be avoided because it is an essential function of the machine. I wish it would do it more at night, but it does it when it feels like it needs it. I wouldn’t place it in or near a bedroom, but we can’t hear it from the kitchen to our room. Otherwise, it works great, and we have had zero issues with it.

I really like this machine. Finally the perfect ice! But, honestly, the sound it makes is awful. While it makes ice – every 5 seconds it makes a dreadful screeching sound. I don’t mind the sound it makes when it’s running – it’s expected, but for this price i feel like it could have been done without the screeching

The ice is truly the coveted ‘good ice’ however the extra water tank is not worth the extra $60 or $70 bucks. It is perfectly simple, just to pour the water in as needed. The water tank does not work. I’m on my second one and the pump just runs. The directions say to remove the bubbles from the line. Everything is according to the directions. Still bubbles and no water being pumped, but again the pump is still running trying to get water out of the reservoir. Real bad for the pump.

It started a loud squealing noise about 4 hours after turning it on the first time. I looked it up on google and there are a lot of comments and videos on how to fix it but it looks complicated and requires special tools. I either have to have a repair person come over and fix it or live with it.
