How is this different than the set sold on the maker’s website for less price??

It’s the same, but after you add in the shipping and handling on the maker’s site, it ends up the same price.

Do you know how i can get the level two expansion to story time chess

Yes we do! You can find story time chess 2: strategy expansion on our website. 🙂 also story time chess 3 & 4 coming out next year.

What size are the squares?

2 inches by 2 inches

Why did the price on amazon go up from $46.99 to $64.99 overnight?

We were running a ‘lighting deal’ on amazon which gives buyers an opportunity for discounted rate on the game for 1 day only. We likely will be running more of these in the future!

I’m an adult wanting to learn chess. Is this too simplistic for an adult?

Sorry for the delay in answering, but i wanted to ask the developer of the game for his advice. This is exactly what he replied:
‘yes, anyone (grown-ups included) can use story time chess to learn the game. Over the last few years, we’ve received countless messages from adults who’ve bought story time chess to teach themselves and it tends to work out great. Just bear in mind that the lessons were developed with ages 3+ in mind, so don’t be surprised if it comes across a bit on the silly side.’

Where the product is maid?

Story time chess is manufactured in china.

Didn’t see anything on castling in the story book?

Hello,
we apologize for any inconvenience,
this is just an assumption here, but i’m assuming they may have left out the more advanced mechanics of the game as to make it less confusing for the targeted age group, although i’m sure that you could find a fun way to teach those game mechanics once they have learned the basics.

Hope this helps,
happy holidays,

Can it be play by just one child?

I think you still need two people to play chess on a board like this. An experienced player can use it to teach a beginner

Is it possible to use this for a small group of 8 children?

Yes and it was fun

The storybook i received has a bunch of pages missing. Does anyone know where i can get a replacement storybook or if i can find an online version?

That’s unfortunate. It doesn’t appear that just the book is available. I would return it as damaged and request a replacement. The book is crucial to learning the game.

Does this game teach opening gambits or similar strategies, or is it just how the pieces move?

Just how the pieces move. The story book and game are only about how the pieces move. There is a separate book that goes into how to actually play the game of chess, but it is distinct from the ‘story’.

I know chess requires 2 to play, but can a child use this alone to learn?

If the child can read and comprehend then there they can read all the stories and do some of the activities/games. However, to complete all the exercises will require two people.

Is this good for a 10 year old and 7 year old to learn to play?

Yes! Oh my goodness yes! I bought it for my 4 year old, and he loves it. More relevant to your question, i have learned to play chess using it and i’m well past my 30’s! The story is amazing, engaging and makes it so easy to remember which pieces move which way. It’s great!

Is it web based?

No. Not at all. It’s a story book, a story board (game board) and all the playing pieces plus a few other things for learning to play and playing some mini games.

Is there any feminist crap in the stories?

Not sure what ‘feminist crap’ has to do with chess, but the set is very good for teaching young children chess, additionally it has the ability to flip over and play normally. Would definitely recommend it for young children wanting to learn chess, but you will need to teach them, this is not designed for kids who can read and play all on their own.

Perfect for little ones to learn!

Loved it! The stories really are pretty silly but they are great to help you learn & remember how each piece is supposed to move. & the game does say it comes with silly stories. One read through the stories & our 6-year-old embarked fearlessly on our first game of chess! (& knew what to do!)
overall the game is designed really nicely. Huge sturdy board, big sturdy pieces where you can attach cardboard cutouts of the characters until you learn which piece is which… Or choose not to, as our little one did. Great game!

Great extension to the original story time chess

We are a homeschooling family and use gameschooling a lot for my 8, 6 and 3 year old. My kids loved reading story time chess and the wonderful engaging stories with king chomper and king shaky. What a brilliant way to make chess concepts really stick. My oldest and i are able to play full games now and it helped me refresh my game skills.

Level 2 : expansion introduces more strategy. Pawn promotion, planning and openings. It includes a fresh set of stories with bonus puzzle workbooks and activities.

Level 3 : tactics expands our game into more strategy. We are also introduced to a ginormous pickle. Yes, a pickle. My kids were thrilled to get a physical pickle as well.

Jokes aside, this works. Is it on the pricier side? Maybe, but they are a small business so i appreciate the cost that goes into growing from nothing.

Amazing

I’ve always wanted to learn chess but have been a bit daunted by it. My 10 year old read through the book and within minutes was playing with his dad. My 7 year old and i went slower and played the mini games but now we are also able to play. We will definitely be getting the expansion pack soon. Both kids enjoy playing.

Children really can play chess using this game

I continued to see advertisements for this game so looked into the reviews. All good reviews so i bought it for my 6 year old granddaughter. Her 6 year old cousin received one from santa. It was amazing during christmas holidays to watch my 2 six year old grandchildren play chess!!!

My 6 year old loves this game!

Entertaining for both adults and children to read and learn. The stories are fun and solidify how each piece moves by giving the characters a back story. There are mini games each step of the way to get kids used to each piece before mixing them together. She asks to play each night and keeps growing her knowledge of the game.

Great way to learn how to play chess!

Story time chess is a fantastic way to learn how to play chess-young and old! The pieces come with a stand so you can attach the cardboard characters to them or just play with the standard pieces once familiar.

If you or your children do not know how to play, i cannot think of a better way to learn.

Easy to learn chess

I got storytime chess for pablo, my son, on friday and started reading the stories of the characters (chess pieces) on saturday and by sunday afternoon he has learned how all the pieces move and remembers them. He is 5, almost 6 years old. I think 4.5 would probably be the youngest i would recommend it for. The stories are 5-10 minutes long each so the child would have to be able to sit and actively listen and retain the story to learn the chess character. Then there are several ‘mini’ games after each story to practice the movements of the chess piece. After dinner tonight we will play our first full game. The base game and book comes with all the basics but doesn’t teach strategy beyond learning the movements.

Best love gift this year

My granddaughter is 5 years old, this was her favorite christmas gift. She didn’t want to go to bed, kept asking for 5 more minutes. She loves princesses so the fantasy story really apply to her. Highly recommend!

Great to teach a child chess moves.

I liked the fact that this game made it super easy to teach my granddaughters chess moves.

Great first chess game

Really enjoy the stories and minigames, i feel like it’s just enough to be challenging yet still fun for a 5 year old. Would highly recommend!

Great product, but who is selling and supplying?

For the selling company being a middleman charging more than what they bought it for when consumers could just buy it direct, i’d give 1 star. For the actual game, i’d give 5 stars.

I was surprised when this game arrived in a barnes & noble box, with barnes & noble shipping receipt, noting purchase by ‘xxxx’ to be sent to me. ‘xxxx’ though isn’t the company listed here, nor are the two residing in the same state. At the time of purchase they were charging $69.99, but after realizing barnes & noble sells it, i discovered it was listed there for $49.99, to which i could have received a membership discount on top of that and applied their current online promotion, 10% off. I’d rather have this game priced around $30 since it’s a training version.

No real concerns or complaints though about the actual item – it arrived brand new and in perfect shape (from barnes & noble). It’s a quality game with quality pieces and interesting approach to help provide better identity to each piece and it’s moving capability. It doesn’t cover some of the special rules, but it’s providing the basics and setting a foundation of play.

Delightful way to teach children to play chess

What a creative and fun way to teach our 5 year-old grandson to play chess! The lessons are one chess piece, one story at a time (a story for each chess piece) with fun practice ‘games’ to learn how the piece moves. Chess has quickly become our grandson’s favorite game. It is a little advanced for his 3 year old sister to grasp the concepts but she likes to be included with the stories.

5 year old and 7 year old enjoyed with granpa.

A bit pricey but pieces and board seem sturdy and the kids are picking up chess basics quickly. Story format subtly promotes reading.

Great product bad packaging

Bought this for my sister. She opened the box and found the pieces dirty with black marks on them. It appeared to be a result of packaging. However she and her three young children played and loved it! Excellent game. Disappointing condition of product. See circled areas in photos

Great concept, stories could improve

I think this is such a great concept! My kids consider story time chess an independent game—useful for building up enthusiasm around chess without being too serious. The stories are cute, but often quite long-winded and, to me at least, does not always form a logic narrative. I think this is partially because everyone on the chess board is portrayed as friends, but it’s confusing that, e.g., both bishops are related to one of the kings. It’s also odd that the characters themselves play chess… Some inception right there! I think the golden age for this game is 4 to 6, for players who are not quite ready to engage with a ‘formal’ chess board, but can start to learn the moves.

Great game but book is full of typos.

This is a fantastic way to learn chess!! I highly recommend. But the book needs to be edited and all the typos need to be fixed. You can’t have a product that is based on a book with so many errors in it. Especially for $50.
