Whynter Black CUF-301BK 3.0 cu. ft. Energy Star Upright Freezer with Lock, 3 Cubic Feet

Our company renovated all 3 floors right as covid happened and we returned to the office in early 2022. The 2 freezers which were ordered back in 2020 are still on backorder which left us with only refrigerators. Since this will not work for ice cream which i do eat quite often i searched and purchased my own unit.

The unit was delivered by amazon in perfect condition and was very easy to set up. Just cut the straps and pull off the box top then the freezer can be lifted off the box base and set on the floor. It took all but 1 minute to unbox and set up.

I’ve had this little freezer for 2 months now and it works great. Keeps all the ice cream frozen solid and tasty for morning or midday snacks. It’s very quiet and you won’t even notice that it’s running unless the compressor is kicking in. One thing i noticed is that ice does accumulate fairly quickly so scheduled defrosting seems to be set for the near future.

I also asked how many containers of ice cream will fit in this freezer and the answers were totally useless so have posted a picture for reference. The ice cream is pint sized instead of 1/2 gallon.

I required a quality, small freezer for the bar area in my man cave. I need it to store/make ice (natch) and to store low abv liquors (vemouths, etc.) that one would normally be stored in the refrigerator. Thus, i required a freezer that could keep a stable temperature in teh range of +5 to +10 f. Thus, ice would freeze (more slowly than -10f obviously) and the low-abv liquor would not freeze. Thus far, i’m happy with this unit. I put a digital tracking thermometer in it and it is working like a champ – cycling between about 6.4f and 7.8f like clockwork (absent opening the door, of course).

Did a ton of research across units and this is the only one that seemed possibly ‘up to snuff’ for me. I’ll update this if things go sideways.

Ps: yes, it came with a couple super super minor dings from shipping – but nothing was broken and it’s fully operational. Nobody will ever notice the aesthetic issues (matte-ish black unit). If you need perfect aesthetics, buy it local and inspect it first.

When l buy a bag of ice the bottom of the bag usually melts and refreezes into a big chunk. L put a 10 lb bag of ice in this freezer and didn’t have to try to chop it apart later. It stayed frozen. Love this gold and black color! Very unique.

Rv refrigerator/freezer is very small so was going to the grocery store all the time. This freezer works great to store more meat. We live in our rv full time so it is a good investment.

Keeps all my food frozen, perfect for apartments where you need a little extra freezer room but don’t wanna take up to much space

We love this freezer. Holds enough to supplement our regular freezer. Quiet as can be. We do not know it’s on unless we open the door to make sure it’s cold inside. Don’t know what i would do without it now. The only thing i would change is to make it self-defrosting. However, we put everything in a plastic bag, and used a hairdryer on the inside to melt the ice. Put towels on the floor. Took about a half hour.
It’s a great little freezer. We have it at least 2 years.

I liked the fact that i can save food for later and also store veggies and meat not to mention ice cream

This little freezer is worth every penny! It is just as advertised. The freezer in our refrigerator is always tight for space. This is just what we needed for the overflow and also can buy more frozen foods making fewer trips to the grocery store.

This freezer works great and fits a lot more than you’d think that it would. Easy to put together.

Bought this freezer for my wife’s breast milk. We live in an rv so space is tight. Freezer works great and it cooled off with no issues. It is placed under the main table and i don’t hear it at all. Very quite.

My only complaint is we run most things off batteries and solar panels. This freezer will spike to 600watts of power but then over around 50watts. It does this quite a bit. Not sure the full impact on my batteries yet with these spikes but it’s something im watching. I included a screenshot if you want to see the power spikes over night.

This is a great freezer if you’re going to store and freeze food. However, if you’re trying to make ice it will take days before they fully freeze. I bought this mainly to make ice but it will take 2 to 3 days for the water to fully freeze. If all you’re looking for is just to freeze food then this is a good freezer however it does not get cold enough to freeze water quickly. It is however a quality freezer that looks like it’s built to last.

Initial i wanted to buy a top open backup refrigerator for the garage storage. Then i found this one is actually better and easier for loading and unloading foods. The top open may be hard to locate the stuff though it may have better insulation. But i really like this one with energy star rating and ample space for stocking up meats and frozen foods.

I dislike that it freezes really fast so therefore i have to defrost it and clean it more often than i like. However it does work to perfection!!

I put standard ice cube trays in it. It has temperature adjustment and it really can get cold! Mine arrived with surface scratches which was disappointing. There is a hum, but the noise is not bothersome.

Just letting y’all know that the temperature control for this unit, unlike other freezers i have seen, is inconveniently located in the back at the bottom by the cooling unit. Hence, in order to change the freeze temperature, you will have to pull the unit away from the wall, at least partially turn it around, then reach down to the bottom to adjust the temperature control. Luckily you likely won’t have to do this often, but i’ve seen other freezers of similar size that have the control inside the door where you can easily reach it. I didn’t think to look for that when i bought this freezer and regret it. Otherwise, the freezer is working fine.

I needed a separate freezer as i have an enormous garden and chop/freeze a lot of produce, herbs, etc and i’ve always been very limited in my current rental house with a small top freezer part of the fridge. This gives me breathing room and lets me stock up more and have less grocery trips.

It arrived standing in the right direction, i was looking all over for tape to cut but once the two hard plastic wraps were off (one was off and hanging when it was delivered), you just grab the box and lift straight up and it leaves the freezer in packaging on a cardboard and foam base.

It appeared well packaged but there was significant scuffs and scratches on top and some sides, a dent from a sharp object on the top, a gouge/hole in the finish on one side (see pic) and the front (1 of 2) leveling foot was completely bent and at a 30-40 degree angle so it doesn’t sit flat…

Door was taped shut and inside looked new/spic and span but after looking back at the box (4 shipping labels, two to two different people in different states), i’m really disappointed the outside is so messed up. I also have no idea what the 3 inch foil sticker covering an odd round bulge in the back is for). All the damage seems cosmetic except the leveling foot which makes it wobbly even though i eventually put wobble wedges under 4 points to get it as steady as possible.

The freezer cooled nicely, i have no frost or anything at this point though it is humid out and in my house for the past week. It was set at setting 5 (1 is the warmest, 6 the coldest), and ice cream is firm but not impossible to scoop so it’s just right.

The shelves are surprisingly roomy (the interior space is closer to exterior size than i had imagined), and the bin is large and well made.

The freezer has kept a zero or below temperature, since it was purchased in sept. 2020. Also defrosting the interior has been straight forward, since the interior surfaces are smooth and the wire shelves are removable.
However, i agree with other some reviewers, that the compressor tends to stay on. Maybe the thermostat would control this? The temperature control dial has been set to the maximum, [6]. Also the compressor has rust spots in a few areas, and is hot to the touch. I wonder if whynter is using a good quality compressor?
Update: (about the compressor tends to stay on.) -if the thermostat dial is turned down lower, from the maxium [6], the compressor does not stay on continuously. The temperature at the [5] setting, was -12f.

Freezes good, easy to defrost

The product looks like it works well but during the delivery the box got damaged and when i opened it the door has a mark of a slam.
